Signs your nervous system is stuck in survival mode
- Going from zero to a hundred, then feeling guilty after
- Shutting down, going numb or blanking out under stress
- Feeling wired and exhausted at the same time
- Trouble sleeping, tight chest, clenched jaw or stomach issues
- Overthinking everything and struggling to switch off
- People pleasing to keep the peace, then feeling resentful
What emotional regulation really means
Emotional regulation is not about suppressing feelings or staying calm all the time. It is the ability to feel strong emotions without being taken over by them, and to come back to steady ground afterwards. Many of us never learned this growing up, especially in families where emotions were dismissed, explosive or not talked about.
The window of tolerance
Everyone has a zone where they can handle stress and still think clearly, often called the window of tolerance. Chronic stress, trauma and burnout shrink that window, so small things push you into fight, flight or shutdown. Therapy helps widen it, so you can stay present and make choices instead of reacting.
How nervous system therapy works
- Somatic therapy: noticing body sensations and gently releasing stored stress
- DBT skills: practical tools for distress tolerance and managing intense emotions
- EMDR: processing memories that keep setting off your alarm system
- Inner child work: understanding where your reactions first started
- Daily practices: breath, movement and grounding tools you can use between sessions
What a nervous system reset is, and is not
A nervous system reset is not a one time trick. It is a gradual process of teaching your body that it is safe enough to rest. Short tools like slow breathing or grounding can help in the moment, and therapy builds lasting change over time. Science first, feeling second.
Frequently asked questions
What is nervous system regulation therapy?
It is therapy that works with your body as well as your thoughts, helping your nervous system move out of chronic fight, flight or shutdown. It often includes somatic therapy, DBT skills and EMDR.

How much does it cost?

Is it available virtually in Ontario?
Yes. Somatic and nervous system work can be done over secure video anywhere in Ontario, and in person at our Ajax office.
