Bipolar Disorder Therapy

Lone tree reflected in a lake at night, the highs and lows of Bipolar Disorder, therapy in Ontario
What bipolar disorder can feel like

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder with periods of depression and periods of unusually high or irritable mood, called mania or hypomania. Between episodes many people feel steady, which can make the shifts confusing for you and the people around you.

  • Low periods with sadness, exhaustion or hopelessness
  • High periods with racing thoughts, little need for sleep and big bursts of energy
  • Feeling unusually irritable or impulsive
  • Risky spending, decisions or behaviour during highs
  • Trouble keeping routines, work or relationships steady
Who I support
  • Bipolar I Disorder
  • Bipolar II Disorder
  • Cyclothymic Disorder (cyclothymia)
  • People exploring whether their mood swings might be bipolar disorder
  • Partners and families of someone living with bipolar disorder

Bipolar Disorder is usually treated with medication from a doctor or psychiatrist. Therapy works best alongside that medical care, and I am happy to coordinate with your care team.

How therapy helps
  • Psychoeducation so you understand your patterns and early warning signs
  • Routines for sleep, energy and stress, with mood tracking that actually fits your life
  • CBT and DBT skills for managing low mood, impulsivity and big emotions
  • Space to work through the shame, grief or relationship strain that bipolar disorder can leave behind
  • A relapse prevention plan you can share with people you trust
